Used Ereader – Tips To Save Money On An iPad, Kindle or Sony Ebook Reader

Buying any product second hand can prove to be a good deal. But the potential complexity of electronic devices can deter many consumers from buying a used ereader. In reality, many electronic devices including ereaders can be very durable if used correctly and well maintained.

While it’s true that you can find some great used ebook readers, there are a few points to be aware of. Firstly, you’ll need to make sure any used device will work with your computer and is able to link to your ebook account if applicable. There’s also the issue of warranty and if any remaining cover is transferrable to you as the new device owner.

Buying A Used Kindle

If you’ve not owned a Kindle ereader before, it’s important to be aware that used Kindle’s will have been registered to the previous owners Amazon account. Therefore, you need to ensure that the device is de-registered before buying so you are able to log into your Amazon account and register it for use with your Kindle ebook purchases. To register a used Kindle against your account simply log in and navigate to the “Your Account>Manage Your Kindle” section and input the serial number of your Kindle. You can view a quick video demonstrating the Kindle’s settings menu and de-registration option in this short Youtube video at

The Kindle warranty lasts for 12 months from purchase and can be transferred to a new owner, though you’ll need to make sure to get the original receipt (or a copy of an e-mail receipt).

Second Hand Sony Reader

This device syncs to software on the owner’s computer. You won’t need to re-register the device, but if the previous owner did not un-sync it before passing it on, you’ll need to carry out a hard reset before you can sync it to your new machine. This involves pushing the reset button on the back of the device with an unfolded paper clip, turning on the device, then pressing the Mark and VOL + buttons while ‘Starting up…’ is on the screen. This will bring up the ‘Reset All’ screen. Performing a hard reset will delete all content on the device, so you may want to read through any books the previous owner left on it before you do this!

The device comes with an unusual warranty: Sony will replace broken parts for one year after purchase, but will charge for the labour involved after the first 90 days. The company also offers an extended service plan, which is transferrable.

Second Hand iPad

When using a second-hand iPad for the first time, you’ll need to delete all content before plugging it in to the computer. This is done by going to the settings menu, choosing ‘reset’, and then choosing ‘erase all content and settings’. If you don’t do this, there are likely to be problems if you already have iTunes on your computer, as the system may assume the device is stolen and lock it out.

Again, new iPad’s come with a 12 month warranty plus 90 days of free telephone support. Apple do offer extended warranty plans called Apple Care which can be transferred if the device is sold. To do this, the seller must email the warranty plan agreement number, iPad serial number and new owner’s details to The iPad serial number is found on the back of the device.

So, whether you are buying a used ereader online or from a friend, getting to know your chosen device before you buy can ensure you avoid being disappointed with your new gadget and get to experience the reading revolution for less.
